Antirrhinum

I was woken up today by a call from one of our surveillance teams, and I have some bad news to report. We can't find either of the nyctas from Snapdragon and Maelstrom's last batch, their trackers have been deactivated.

These trackers don't just fall off, they're embedded deep by the time they reach adulthood, and the only reason they deactivate this early is if they don't detect a heartbeat. That means the two nyctas are either dead already or dying from having a huge chunk ripped out of them.

The two were together when the trackers died, one after the other, so we flew a drone out to their last known location to see if we could at least find the bodies. The only thing we found there was blood, massive amounts of it, and signs of a fight with a large carnivore. We searched a good radius around the site, further than they could have gotten if they somehow survived the encounter.

Our current theory is that they were ambushed by one of the large predators on the island, which would explain how fast they were killed and why we couldn't find any signs of them since all of the apexes here can eat the bones as well.

This is a big hit to the team's morale, but I'm just glad that our unlikely pair didn't get caught up in that fight. They don't see their kids very often after they are grown, but for their sake, I hope they don't find that place. Maelstrom might be hyperaggressive but I know that both of them would be grieving if they knew.
